November 10, 2010
Dear WFHB Community Member,
As the holiday season approaches, it is time to celebrate what our community provides and reflect on how to give back.
Since 1993, Bloomington Community Radio WFHB has been committed to providing its listeners with diverse quality programming with a focus on local talent and issues. Broadcasting to six counties in south central Indiana over four FM frequencies -- and to listeners around the world via Web stream – WFHB is 98% volunteer- powered. The station depends on a network of over 200 individuals – your neighbors, friends, and family -- who donate their time as news writers, DJs, receptionists, sound technicians, CD reviewers, and even recycling sorters.
WFHB encourages partnerships with other organizations to foster positive change in our community. In the run up to this year’s pivotal midterm elections, for example, WFHB and Community Access Television Services (CATS) collaborated to provide thorough and balanced coverage of local and state candidates and issues. WFHB also partnered with residents of Brown County to set up a satellite studio in downtown Nashville, to create an hour-long news and affairs special, “The Brown County Hour.” And we worked with the Bloomington Storytelling Project to produce a program of unscripted true-life stories from area residents called “The Porch Swing.”
In recognition of our effort to provide quality programming, the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists honored WFHB’s news department with eleven awards in April of this year, including best newscast, best radio writing, and best social justice reporting.
All this in addition to the dozens of local non-profit groups we highlight and support through our events calendars, public service announcements, and news features.
WFHB’s music department has expanded its live remote broadcasts from local recording studios—Russian Recording, Midwest, and Farm Fresh Studios. WFHB’s music department produces “Local Live” segments, remote broadcasts, and in-studio appearances by touring artists throughout the year – nearly 200 performances in 2010. As it has for almost 20 years, Bloomington Community Radio remains dedicated to its mission to promote cultural and intellectual diversity in the communities we serve.
Our local partners, underwriters, and volunteers have shown great support and dedication in keeping WFHB a diverse, quality option for news and music, but they cannot do it alone. They need your help, too. Like the workforce that drives the day-to-day operation of the station, WFHB depends on the support of generous contributions from listeners like you.
So whether you listen in your car, online at work, or at home with your family, if you appreciate what WFHB offers to our community, please consider making a donation today. Whatever amount you can provide --$10, $25, $50, $100—will make a difference in your community. Your generosity ensures that WFHB will remain THE source for the best in live, local, community radio – a civil and diverse alternative to satellite, automated, corporate, impersonal media.
And as you prepare for end-of-year contributions for tax purposes, please keep in mind that Bloomington Community Radio is a 501(c)3 organization.
Thank you for making another year of community radio possible, and all best wishes for 2011.
Sincerely,
Will Murphy
