Bring It On! - July 12, 2010

One hundred years ago boxer Jack Johnson became the first black heavyweight champion of the world. Dr. Bill Wiggins is Professor Emeritus of Afro-American Studies at Indiana University and joins us in the studio to examine Johnson's conquests and pitfalls of Jack Johnson and that historic bout on July 4, 1910 that at the time was billed as the "Fight of the Century". Also in this program: our black history segment "Dark Past Bright Future" brings you the stories of African-American heroes you don't read about in any textbook. Our featured musical artist is Walter Hawkins, a Grammy Award-winning gospel singer/composer who died yesterday after a protracted battle with pancreatic cancer. Director of the Office of Minority Health for the Indiana State Department of Health Antoinette Holt invites listeners to this week’s minority health fair at the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration. As always, Bring It On! features regional and national news relevant to the local African-American community. Hosted by Breshaun Joyner and Cornelius Wright.
