Bring It On! - July 16, 2007

Bloomington resident and black author Janet Cheatham Bell talks about her riveting memoirs and how her research led her to discover a wealth of documents about how Indiana University administrators once dealt with black students, particularly regarding campus housing. Ms. Bell is a native Hoosier and publishing entrepreneur and a former education consultant for the Indiana Department of Education. Bell has also taught African-American literature at a number of colleges and universities and is one of ten living co-founders of the Indiana University Alumni Association's Neal-Marshall Alumni Club. Bell's research led her to investigate IU archives as well as liberally dip into the wealth of information her mother kept about her family. Correspondents Jim and Liz Mitchell present the final installment of a three-part series on slaveholders who themselves were black on a new edition of our history segment "Dark Past Bright Future"; and our featured musical artist this week is Steel Pulse, the seminal British reggae band weaving black history lessons into socially conscious, politically-charged lyrics and solid Jamaican beats. As always Bring It On! features regional and national headline news and a regional calendar highlighting events relevant to the local African-American community. Hosted by Cornelius Wright and Breshaun Joyner.
