Bring It On! - July 20, 2009

A Bloomington neighborhood with a high percentage of low-income residents will once again serve as the backdrop for the annual National Night Out crime prevention awareness event. National Night Out brings together citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities. Last year over 37 million people participated in National Night Out across the U.S. This year's event is on August 4th in front of the Bloomington Housing Authority in the Crestmont public housing neighborhood. Local National Night Out coordinators Phil Williams and Vickie Provine join us live in the studio to talk about the activities that will take place including a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and dance contest. Also in this program: our savvy sistah Leila Randle has a horror story about a hotel room deal that was too good to be true on a new edition of "HomeGurl Shopping", featuring tips from one black woman trying to survive in today's poor economy. Our featured musical artists are The Revelations with classic soul throwback tunes that recall the days of Otis Redding and Stax Records with an old school soul revivalist vibe. Bring It On! also features regional and national headline news relevant to the local African-American community. Hosted by Beverly Calender-Anderson and Clarence Boone.
