FEATURE
The South Central Community Action Program and Monroe County United Ministries celebrate the 45th anniversary of the signing of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. That act, signed by President Lyndon Johnson, created community action agencies and several other War on Poverty programs. MCUM, then called the Christian Center, sponsored the origins of the Monroe County Community Action Agency. Community members active in the movement during that era reflect on its importance, alongside local officials from programs still in operation that were created during this time period including adult basic education. Director of Adult Basic Education at MCCSC Sherry Dick talks about how the Broadview Learning Center sends adults “back to their future” after SCCAP's Todd Lare sets the stage in this WFHB exclusive.
