A Hoosier in Haiti: Alexa Tarter

Alexa Tarter graduated from high school in West Lebanon, Indiana, in 2005 and graduated college in 2009. Now she works for the Haiti Foundation Against Poverty, a Michigan-based non-profit charity which helps provide Haitian children with life necessities like food, clothing, shelter, and education. In 2006 the program began food distributions. In 2008 they opened their own elementary school in Haiti, and last year opened a medical clinic for youth. The plan for 2010 had been to purchase a building to use as an orphanage for impoverished, parentless children. Then the earthquake hit. Now the Haiti Foundation Against Poverty is focusing on disaster relief and infrastructure repair in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding area. Alexa Tarter has been in Haiti most of the time since the earthquake struck, and was recently back home in Indiana for about a week before heading back. During that short break Tarter visited Bloomington to share her firsthand experiences on the ground in Haiti. A WFHB radio exclusive recorded on-location at the Monroe County Public Library in Bloomington, Indiana on March 14, 2010.
