MonroeCounty Girl Scouts will complete their 100 Blankets for 100 Years of Girl Scouts on Monday, January 16,  from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at St. Paul Catholic Center.  Girl Scouts age kindergarten through high school will work with senior RSVP volunteers and IU Campus Girl Scouts to create 100 tied-fleece baby/child blankets.  These will be donated to local shelters and crisis support centers.  In addition, kitten and puppy toys, knitted hats, and cheery cards for housebound seniors will be created to donate to other local agencies.

IUOS is partnering with BHSS, ESD, ViS and the SSC, to expand last year's dispatching of "Energy SWAT Teams" in the community on MLK Day.  After a series of pre-event audits conducted in late December and early January to assess the level of need in each home, teams will visit the homes on MLK Day to make basic energy improvements and provide residents information about how to make larger-scale improvements that will result in energy savings.  Improvements include CFL, weatherstripping, and other efficiency installations.  Participating homeowners will also receive information on how to do a “self-audit” of their home.

Because of voter ID laws, it isn’t enough to get people to the polls; we must ensure that everyone eligible to vote has the appropriate identification. The Monroe County branch along with the Indiana University chapter will execute multiple voter registration and ID drives; host educational forums; assist individuals, particularly the elderly and poor, obtain the appropriate documents; and transport individuals to the BMV to get IDs.

YSB Garden Project

Youth Services Bureau (YSB) will restore our shelter's raised garden beds.  We will facilitate educational opportunities for our shelter residents on preparing and maintaining the beds, as well as engage in conversations about nutrition, local food, and healthy living through a partnership with Mother Hubbard's Cupboard.  The YSB will use what is harvested for resident meals and donate excess food to local organizations.  We also hope to collaborate with Stone Belt to provide an opportunity for their clients to engage in meaningful activity by helping maintain the garden. The project will launch the week of MLK Day with educational activities in the shelter and continue throughout the year.
