The impact of the music of Carl Stalling and Raymond Scott cannot be overstated.  Serving as the sonic cornerstone of golden-age Warner Bros. animation, the compositions of Stalling and Scott are little miracles of joyous avant-garde invention.

Seemingly composed of unequal parts Marianne Faithful, Loretta Lynn, and Diamandia Galas, Carla Bozulich's voice is a fierce and otherworldly instrument.  From The Geraldine Fibbers (with longtime collaborator Nels Cline, currently of Wilco fame) to current project Evangelista (with members of Godspeed! You Black Emperor), Bozulich's own unique brand of Americana sets her apart from the alt-country pack.

2009 has been a very good year for Robert Pollard.  With 7 strong releases this year alone (including two certifiable classics), Uncle Bob sounds thoroughly re-energized and seems primed to assume his rightful position in the pantheon of the True Rock Lords, seating himself comfortably between Pete Townsend and Robyn Hitchcock. 

Charlie Parker (8/29/20 - 3/12/55) was a true giant among men, and nowhere more so than on the bandstand.  These two long-out-of-print Columbia releases showcase Bird at his best.  

Mingus - Dolphy - Hentoff   NYC 10/20/1960

Marc Ribot is the Eric Dolphy of the guitar.  Both chameleonic and utterly distinctive, he's long been the guitarist of choice for such artists as Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, T-Bone Burnett, Sam Phillips, Joe Henry, Medeski Martin and Wood, and John Zorn, as well as recording 17 albums under his own name. 

Just before deciding to put down his horn and sit out the rest of the 70's in retirement, world-famous science-fiction character Miles Davis rolled through Japan, Godzilla-style.

Reckoning, R.E.M.'s second (and arguably best) album gets the Deluxe re-issue treatment with a bonus disc of the scrappy young Georgians tearing it up at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom in 1984.
